Alexandria girls' basketball: Second half sinks Cards
Alexandria saw an 11-point halftime lead dwindle as Moorhead picked up its defensive intensity and found their way to the rim for a 66-62 win over the Cardinals.
“The Cardinals came out flying as we were energized defensively and displayed confidence on offense as we built an 18-point lead in what seemed like a potential blowout,” said head coach Wendy Kohler. “However, turnovers (27), foul trouble and stalled offensive execution led to a huge collapse.
“Credit the Spuds as they hit some big bombs to put them in position to win.”
An offensive charge call against Amanda Christianson at 3:47 in the second half proved to be the final straw for Alexandria, and gave momentum to the Spuds.
Unofficially, Christianson led the Cards with 16 points, while Kalli Bowser was credited with 14 and Karly Betterman 12.
Moorhead got 20 points from Kelli Tonn and 19 from Hailey Wixo as the Spuds improved to 5-8 overall.
The Cards are now 7-5 overall and will host Rocori on Tuesday. They were at Willmar last night, Tuesday.
