By: Lori Mork, Alexandria Echo Press

Behind a hat trick from Tom Schmidt, the Cardinal boys’ hockey team ran roughshod over River Lakes for a 5-0 win as Alexandria outshot the Stars 59-15 on the night.

“After the first [period], the shots were about even and the score was knotted at zero,” said head coach Scott Woods. “The second period, the tide turned in favor of the Cards.”

Schmidt got his first goal of the game on an assists by Andrew Rentschler just 18 seconds into the second period, and Ryan Marciniak gave Alexandria a 2-0 lead as she scored on assists by Patrick Leary and Logan Hochsprung.

“The final period was all Alexandria again,” said Woods. “Tom opened the scoring with assists going to Jack Wensman and Andrew. A few minutes later, Patrick Leary scored on a power play, with the pass coming from Ryan Marciniak and Aaron Steidl.”

The final goal of the night was Schmitz’s, completing the hat trick as Wensman and Matt Resch were credited with assists.

“Ben Allen was rock solid in the net with his third shutout of the season,” said Woods.

Alexandria will host Brainerd Tuesday night at 7:15 p.m. They hosted St. Cloud Tech last night, Thursday.
