Alexandria picked up a 6-2 girls’ hockey win over the weekend to take the driver’s seat in the section standings.
Neither team was able to score in the first period, despite the Cardinals’ shot advantage of 16-1.
That same advantage followed Alexandria into the second period, but the Cards did have to kill a five minute penalty, along with another minor two minutes penalty at the same time, slowing their offensive attack, but still leaving them on the top end of a 10-4 shot advantage.
The Cards also broke the stalemate as Shelby Iverson scored the first of her two goals of the game, unassisted, at 1:45 of the second period.
“At the 6:14 mark, Becca Illies started an around the horn setup on the power play, passing to Iverson, up to Shaneé Herd, who brought it back to McKenzie Revering, who lit up a fantastic shot over the moving goalie’s shoulder for a 2-0 lead,” said head coach Andy Shriver.
Detroit Lakes got on the board during a 5-on-3 power play, and tied the score with just 26 seconds remaining in the second.
“Although Alexandria was controlling play, they found themselves in a 2-2 tie going into the third,” said Shriver.
Alexandria increased its offensive pressure in the third period, and it paid off as the Cards scored four unanswered goals.
“Madi Houska got it rolling by tipping in a powerful Lauren Niska slap shot on a feed from Taylor Ellingson.
“Ellingson’s line connected again six minutes into the period as Taylor continued her scoring streak with a goal off a feed from Houska and Melissa Drown,” he added.
Iverson got her second goal of the night off a feed from Niska and Drown finished the scoring with just 1.6 seconds to play in the game.
The Cardinals will play again next Tuesday when they host Brainerd-Little Falls at 5:15 p.m.
