Senior forward Tom Schmidt picked opportune times to score two goals on Friday night as the Alexandria boys’ hockey team got past Fergus Falls 3-2.
Schmidt took advantage of two power plays to help his team up its record to 4-1-1 in conference play. He scored with just one second left on the clock in the second period to give the Cardinals a 2-0 lead heading into the third.
The Otters responded with two straight goals to tie things up in the final frame. With 2:05 remaining, Fergus Falls took a costly penalty that set Alexandria up on the power play. Schmidt made that hurt for the Otters, this time taking a pass from Parker Revering and scoring what turned out to be the game winner.
The Cardinals outshot the Otters 36-22 in the game. Matt Resch got Alexandria going midway through the second period off assists from Revering and Schmidt.
Ben Allen got the win in net for the Cardinals as he stopped 20 shots. That helped cement Alexandria’s third win in section play and move the team to 6-5-1 overall. The team was scheduled to be at River Lakes last night, Tuesday, before returning home to host St. Cloud Tech on Thursday.
