Hazel was born May 19, 1917 in Spruce Hill Township, the daughter of Hjalmer and Hannah (Clark) Johnson. She attended country school and graduated from Alexandria High School. After her graduation, Hazel moved to the Twin Cities, where she met and married Leo Hillesheim.
The couple lived in the Crystal area, where they raised their son, Bob. During this time, Hazel worked at Daytons in downtown Minneapolis. The Hillesheims belonged to a square dance club, of which they both enjoyed being a part. In 1976, Leo and Hazel moved to the Alexandria area. Hazel continued to work and was employed at Herbergers.
Hazel was a great cook. Her pies were everyone’s favorite. She was a person you could always count on, she had a heart of gold and was a devoted wife and mother.
She is survived by her son, Robert “Bob” Hillesheim and Dez Rock of Alexandria; grandson, Jon Hillesheim of Oxford, England; brother, Donald and wife, Mildred of Alexandria; sisters, Leona Galaziewski of Alexandria and Doris Lund of Alexandria.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Leo; parents; and brother, Gordon.
Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, January 8 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alexandria. Burial was at Spruce Hill Cemetery.
