On January 5 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., Lake Carlos State Park in Carlos will host a Carlos Christmas Bird Count at the Lake Carlos State Park Visitor Center.

The event is open to the public. People do not need to be master birders to participate, as they will work in teams. Participants are needed to help with the annual bird survey around Lake Carlos State Park.

At 8 a.m., a warm-up birding walk around the park will begin, and maps of the seven-mile radius survey areas for teams to count will be divided at 9 a.m.

Teams will take their maps, binoculars, data sheets and bird guides along with them in vehicles to count the birds in their area.

Teams will then meet up at the end of the survey around 2:30 p.m. at Lake Carlos State Park, where teams will compare, share and collect the data.

Food and refreshments will be provided for those who participated.

Results of the survey will be submitted to The Minnesota Ornithologists’ Union and National Audubon Society.
