Habitat joins 2013 building effort

Habitat for Humanity of Douglas County (HFHDC) recently announced that the affiliate was awarded $136,500 to build two homes in 2013 through the Thrivent Builds with Habitat for Humanity program.

The grant provides 50 percent of the cost of construction and was given to HFHDC by Thrivent Builds with Habitat for Humanity, a unique partnership between Thrivent Financial for Lutherans and Habitat for Humanity International.

HFHDC was given the award in conjunction with an announcement of a national gift made by Thrivent on December 17. The 2013 commitment from the organization is $6.8 million and will push the total giving from Thrivent past $180 million.

The 2013 commitment will fund the construction and rehabilitation of 113 Habitat homes in 31 states, including the two homes built by HFHDC in Alexandria.

Locally, Thrivent Financial for Lutherans representatives have actively participated in the building and repair of homes through Thrivent Builds and Thrivent Builds Repairs projects, working alongside local congregations and volunteers to provide a hand up to families in need of safe, decent and affordable housing.

These two homes will bring the number of homes built in Douglas County through the Thrivent Builds program to 10, along with one Thrivent Builds Repairs project this past fall.

Construction on the first home will begin the first week of May, while construction of the second home will begin in July. Both homes are planned to be built in Alexandria.
