Boys' basketball: Ashby stays undefeated

By: Lori Mork, Alexandria Echo Press

Ashby ended its 2012 portion of the schedule with a 70-64 win over Hancock to improve to 7-0 on the season.

The Arrows held a 41-23 lead near the end of the first half, but saw the Owls come back to cut the lead to 11 at the half. They then outscored the Arrows by five in the second half, but couldn’t make any more headway into Ashby’s lead.

“In the second half, the Arrows worked hard to build a 63-40 lead with about seven minutes left to play, but again Hancock made a huge 24-7 run to finish the game and came up just a little short in the end,” said Ashby head coach Jeremy Knick. “We had some really good moments in this game, and a lot of different guys had to step up with JP Moe out with an ankle sprain.

“We really had them on the ropes when we were up 63-40 and we should have put the game away at that point. We really missed JP’s presence to pace the game and lead the offense, but it was a good learning opportunity for those guys about what it takes to close out a game.”

Blake Ohren led the Arrows with 26 points on 12-for-24 shooting, and added eight rebounds, two blocks and two steals.

Tanner Langlie had a double-double with 17 points and 18 rebounds, adding three assists.
