Girls' basketball: Brandon-Evansville wins third straight contest
By: Eric Morken, Alexandria Echo Press
The Brandon-Evansville girls took a three-game winning streak into the holiday break after a career night from Megan Friedrich last Thursday.
The senior guard finished with a career-high 20 points and 18 rebounds as she helped the Chargers to a 55-46 win over Bertha-Hewitt. She was one of three players in double figures as Megan Kokett added 15 points and Emily Friedrich finished with 10.
“Megan had a good game,” head coach Dick Simpson said. “We shot well again and played pretty good defense. [Arei] Stokes is a pretty good player, and we were able to keep her somewhat under control. It is a nice little run here after the first five games to start.”
Stokes and Ashton Kapphahn were the only two players in double figures for the Bears. Stokes finished with 18, while Kapphan poured in 12. Bertha-Hewitt shot just 31 percent on the night (16-of-52). The Chargers also out-rebounded the Bears 46-32.
Bertha-Hewitt held a one-point lead at 23-22 before the Chargers went on a 10-0 run to close out the half. They went on to hit seven threes in the game to make sure that lead never disappeared.
It was a nice way to go into the break for Brandon-Evansville after starting the season 0-5. The Chargers will be off until January 4, when they welcome in Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley for a non-conference tilt.
