Girls' basketball: Eight from long range fuel Chargers win

Brandon-Evansville defeated Rothsay 58-47 Tuesday.

The Brandon-Evansville girls hit eight threes on their way to a 58-47 win over Rothsay on Tuesday night.

Carlie Steffenson had four of those triples on her way to a team-high 14 points. Megan Friedrich matched that point total and added seven rebounds. Emma Friedrich finished with a double-double of 10 points and 10 boards as Brandon-Evansville won its second game in a row after starting the season 0-5.

Those triples helped the Chargers overcome a night where they shot 36 percent overall (20-56). They also struggled a bit from the free throw line, going 10-of-20, but a season-low seven turnovers helped them overcome those things.

“That was key,” head coach Dick Simpson said of the low turnovers. “We hit those eight threes and they hit just three. Then free throws, we didn’t shoot them well, but we still took 20 of them.”

The Chargers were able to take control near the end of the first half and never look back. They went on an 8-1 run to close things out before the break. Brandon-Evansville was able to stretch that lead to as much as 15 points in the second half.

That helped the Chargers even their Little Eight Conference record at 2-2 with the win. They were scheduled to go out of conference for a game against a winless Bertha-Hewitt team (0-7) last night, Thursday. That is their final game before the holiday break. Brandon-Evansville will be back in action on January 4 against Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley at home.
