Alexandria girls' hockey: Cardinals skate to 4-2 win over Icebreakers

A three-goal third period powered Alexandria past the St. Cloud Icebreakers Tuesday as Melissa Drown scored a pair, while Shelby Iverson and Anna Carlsen each had one.
“After controlling play in the first period, but still giving up the first goal, the Cards got on the board with a Shelby Iverson goal on a great feed from Shaneé Herd,” said head coach Andy Shriver.
“The second period was a little more even and the Cards continued to appear as the stronger team, but St. Cloud played tough defense.”
Neither team got on the board in the second period, but the Cardinals made up for the dry spell in the third, scoring three straight for a 4-1 lead.
“The third period finally paid the dividends of the Cardinals’ depth and hard work as the home team got a goal from Anna Carlsen,” said Shriver. “Then Melissa Drown scored a key goal to make it 3-1, and followed later with the fourth Cardinal goal.”
The Cardinals needed to kill a penalty with just two minutes remaining, and the Icebreakers pulled their goalie for a 6-on-4 advantage.
Alexandria committed another penalty, leaving St. Cloud with a 6-on-3 advantage, but the Cardinals were able to skate off the entire first penalty without giving up a score.
But, with just three seconds remaining on the clock, the Icebreakers took advantage, scoring a power play goal.
“Amy Jost stood very tough in the last sequence especially, making a number of saves against the 6-on-3 power play, ending the night with 19 saves,” said the coach.
Alexandria will host Fergus Falls on Tuesday, January 3.
