Alexandria boys' basketball: Cardinals stop Flyers 46-43

By: Eric Morken, Alexandria Echo Press

The Cardinal boys’ basketball team proved that even when shots aren’t falling, a team can still find a way by doing the little things right.

Alexandria shot just 1-of-12 from three-point range and 36 percent overall against a 3-0 Little Falls team on Tuesday night. That didn’t matter in the end as the Cardinals held on for a 46-43 win that snapped a three-game losing streak.

They did it by outrebounding the Flyers 30-19 and hitting 19 free throws. Alexandria also played well on defense as Little Falls finished 14-of-41 from the field, including a 4-of-18 night from three.

“Rebounding and free throw shooting proved to be the main factors in the victory,” head coach Forrest Witt said.

Logan Doyle gave the Cardinals another double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds. He hit 6-of-9 free throws, while Joe Gorghuber scored all six of his points from the free throw line by going 6-of-8 from the stripe.

Chase Kohler finished with eight points on 4-of-5 shooting from two-point range. Brandon Bistodeau and David Krivanek each added seven points apiece as well. It was a nice win for Alexandria against a Little Falls team that had beaten Fergus Falls by 20 points in the season opener.

The Cardinals will be back in action on January 3 when they travel to Brainerd. They were trying to take a two-game winning streak into their holiday break when they welcomed in Detroit Lakes to Alexandria last night, Thursday.
