Team Extreme Ice

Fishing tournaments

Lake Osakis will be the first stop of the Team Extreme Ice Fishing tournament on December 30. Action will continue on Lake Minnewaska in Glenwood on January 27, followed by Pelican Lake in Monticello on February 27, Clearwater Lake in St. Cloud on March 3, Round Lake in Brainerd on March 31 and Mille Lacs Lake in Garrison on April 7.

This is a team event with two anglers per team, with eight crappies and eight sunfish allowed to be weighed in. In the Mille Lacs Lake event, the limit will be 15 perch.

Action will run from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and there is a limit of 75 teams.

Frozen Ole Pond Hockey

The Frozen Ole Pond Hockey championships are set for January 11-13 in the Viking Plaza Mall parking lot next to D. Michael B’s.

There will be seven divisions, 336 skaters, 4,000 square feet of ice and three rinks where 105 games of hockey will be played.

Along with the hockey action, there will be live music on Friday and Saturday nights and craft beer sampling, along with other vendors.

Elks Hoop Shoot

The annual Elks Hoop Shoot will be held on Thursday, December 27 at 2 p.m. in the Jefferson High School gymnasium.

The competition is open to boys and girls ages 8-13 as of April 1, 2013.

Polar Plunge

Registration is now open for the 2013 Alexandria Polar Bear Plunge, presented by Minnesota law enforcement to benefit Special Olympics Minnesota. The funds raised benefit more than 7,100 Special Olympics Minnesota athletes.

Minnesota NWTF

Norseman call making competition

The Minnesota State Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) is inviting all turkey call makers throughout the state and across the country to enter the Minnesota NWTF Norseman call making competition at the Arrowwood Resort and Conference Center in Alexandria on Saturday, January 12.

The competition, sponsored by Gamehide/Elimitick, will have 11 call making categories, with a $10 registration for each entry. Contestants may choose to sell (50/50 split) or donate their call. If the call is donated, the entry fee will be waived.

Cash prizes will be awarded for the top two places in each category as well as a Best of Show category.

Call makers can ship calls to the contest coordinator if they are unable to attend. All calls must be preregistered by January 9.

LAR adult volleyball

Lakes Area Recreation began taking registrations December 3 for winter adult volleyball leagues.

Leagues are available for men, women, and mixed couples. There are different classifications in each league to fit the player’s ability.

Cost is $250 for the team fee. The registration deadline is December 28.

YMCA offering winter events

the Alexandria Area YMCA will be offering winter youth basketball for boys and girls ages preschool through 3rd grade.

Gym rats for preschool children will run from Saturday, January 5 through Saturday, February 16.

Youth basketball for kindergarten will run from Monday, January 7 through Monday, February 23.

Beginning and advanced gymnastics will run from January 8 through February 19.

Indoor youth soccer for boys and girls ages preschool through 1st grade will run from Thursday, January 10 through Thursday, February 21.

Baseball fitness clinics will begin Sunday, January 6, with baseball specific training beginning Sunday, January 13.

Softball clinics and fitness training will begin Sunday January 3, with softball specific training beginning January 6.

Batting cages will be open to softball and baseball players on Fridays and Saturdays beginning Sunday January 7. Saturday openings begin February 23.

Financial assistance for YMCA youth soccer and other programming is available to both members and non-members.

LAR 35-older open gym

Lakes Area Recreation holds open gym on Sundays for 35-older from 7-9 p.m. at the Discovery Middle School gym, running to the middle of April.

Cost is $3 for adults.

Tiny Dribblers basketball program at LAR

Lakes Area Recreation will hold the Tiny Dribblers program for boys and girls in kindergarten as an introduction to the game of basketball.

The program will meet seven times at the Lincoln Elementary gym on Saturdays beginning on January 5 and running through February 16. Boys will meet from 9-9:45 a.m. and the girls will meet from 10-10:45 a.m.

Cost is $32 and includes a T-shirt.

Montevideo youth basketball tournament

There will be a youth basketball tournament in Montevideo for boys and girls in grades 5-7 on Saturday, March 23.

Entry deadline is March 8.
