Girls' basketball: Brandon Evansville girls get first win of the season

By: Eric Morken, Alexandria Echo Press

The Brandon-Evansville girls’ basketball team got its first win of the season in a 47-34 game against Ashby last Friday night.

The Chargers shot just 14-of-43 but won the game at the free throw line, where they went 14-of-16. They also outrebounded the Arrows 43-25 on a night when Emma Friedrich and Megan Kokett each grabbed 10 boards.

“We made free throws, especially down the stretch,” head coach Dick Simpson said. “We played good half-court defense, rebounded well and shot free throws well. Those were the keys. It was a good win for us.”

The win snapped what had been a five-game losing skid to start the season. The Chargers extended the Arrows’ losing streak to five games in the process as they fell to 0-5 on the season. The Arrows were held to just 12-of-43 shooting as Cassandra Jordan led their offense with 18 points. No other player finished in double figures for Ashby.

The Chargers finished with seven players scoring, led by Megan Friedrich’s 14 points. The senior guard added eight rebounds, five steals and combined for eight deflections and blocks to make her presence felt on both ends of the court. Carlie Steffenson added 10 points to help her team pull away.

Brandon-Evansville had two road games on the schedule this week before heading into the holiday break. The Chargers were at Rothsay last night, Tuesday, before going to Bertha-Hewitt on Thursday.
