Tony Hubbard captured the 145-pound individual championship, by beating two state-ranked wrest-lers, and led the Cardinal to their seventh place team finish in a field of 30 squads at the Redwood River Riot tournament in Redwood Falls Friday and Saturday.

“Tony won his championship match by a score of 10-4 to claim his second tournament championship of the season,” said head coach Tom Ellison. “Justin Cumberbatch was also in the finals, but had to settle for second place as he ran into two-time state champ Justin Rose from Sibley East.

“Ben Bogart continues to wrestle with a lot of determination and placed fourth in the 106 weight class. Trent Piepenburg placed fifth and Blake Olhausen placed sixth.

“The Cardinals continue to show improvement on the mat this season compared to last year and they are working hard to make even greater strides as this season moves into our Central Lakes Conference duals.

“Our whole team wrestled well in this very tough tournament,” added Ellison. “Many state-ranked wrestlers were represented in this tournament.

“We still don’t have all of our lineup together as we have a few injuries. We have one conference dual this week, and then the Christmas break, which should allow some of our athletes to get some rest and be ready after the break.”

Hubbard defeated Brandon Strong of Minneapolis South, ranked No. 10 in Class AAA at 145 pounds, then took down Aaron Trio of Maple River, ranked No. 7 in Class A after taking his first three matches by pin.

Alexandria will be at Sauk Rapids-Rice tomorrow, Thursday.
