Girls' basketball: Brandon-Evansville drops two

The Brandon-Evansville girls saw their losing streak reach five games to start the season after losses to Underwood and Barnesville in the last week.

Barnesville stretched out a 31-18 lead at the break to win 64-37 on Tuesday night. That came after Underwood came to Brandon and handed the Chargers a 70-42 loss in Little Eight Conference action.

The Trojans were able to snap a two-game losing streak by outrebounding Brandon-Evansville 39-24. That, coupled with 24 turnovers by the Chargers, created a lot of offensive opportunities. Barnesville shot 28-of-69 from the floor, compared to 12-of-37 for Brandon-Evansville.

“It wasn’t a good night,” head coach Dick Simpson said. “Basically, we got outhustled on the boards and we had too many turnovers. We gave up nine transition baskets off turnovers. We just got basically outplayed all over.”

Megan Friedrich was the only Chargers’ player in double figures. She finished with 14 points, while Carrigan Okerlund was second on the team with five points.

Things didn’t come much easier against Underwood last Friday night. The Chargers shot just 29 percent from the field and the Rockers responded with 42 percent shooting of their own. Carly Masloski led the way with 21 points, while Greta Thormodson and Kaitlyn Holen chipped in 18 and 10 points, respectively.

Megan Kokett led two Brandon-Evansville players in double figures with 13. Carlie Steffenson added 10 and Megan Friedrich finished with a team-high 10 rebounds.

The loss to the Rockets dropped the Chargers to 0-2 in the LEC. They will have a chance to earn their first win in league play tonight, Friday, when they welcome in a winless Ashby team for a 7:30 tip. Brandon-Evansville will then be at Rothsay next Tuesday to take on a 2-2 Tigers team.
