Boys' basketball: Brandon-Evansville earns first win, Ashby cruises to victory

The Brandon-Evansville boys’ basketball team got its first win of the season after running into a buzz saw in the defending Class A state champions in Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa last Friday night.
The Chargers bounced back from a 70-26 loss with a 55-37 win over Parkers Prairie on Tuesday. They shot a season-high 45 percent (22-of-49) and got contributions from up and down its lineup.
“I think this gives them some relief,” head coach John Holsten said of getting that first win. “We were able to be patient offensively and really work hard to get good shots. I think the kids proved to themselves that they can make shots if they take good ones.”
John Haseman was once again the catalyst after being held to a season-low eight points against BBE. The senior forward finished with 27 points, 17 rebounds, two steals and two assists. Blake Satterlie added eight points and Patrick Schaffer had what Holsten called his best floor game of the year with four points, six rebounds and five assists.
The Jags never let the Chargers get into that kind of rhythm on offense. They used their length and athleticism to jump out to a 43-17 lead at the break. They never looked back from there and ran their winning streak to 37 games after going 33-0 a year ago.
BBE didn’t take a single three on the night. The Jaguars didn’t need, finishing 60 percent from the field on 34-of-57 shooting from inside the arc.
“Their transition offense was very good,” Holsten said. “They were able to take our turnovers and turn them into fastbreak lay-ups. We were OK when we could play with a set defense and stay out of transition. They’re just too good.”
The second-ranked Jaguars didn’t leave any doubt as they outscored the Chargers 16-2 to start the game. They came out of halftime equally as fast, going on a 20-2 run that blew the game wide open.
The Jaguars limited the Chargers to 10-of-24 shooting from two-point range and 2-of-15 from three. Satterlie and Haseman each had eight points to lead their team in scoring. Schaffer added six points as well.
