Basketball: Scoreless stretches cost Minnewaska

Despite a 20-point, six-steal game from senior Austin Lieser, Minnewaska couldn’t hold off the Morris/Chokio-Alberta Tigers Friday night, suffering their first loss of the season in a 60-48 West Central Conference contest.
The Lakers went cold early in the first half, allowing the Tigers to go on a 16-0 scoring run to negate an early Minnewaska lead.
The Lakers, however, rallied back before the half to trail by just five at the break.
Unfortunately, cold shooting plagued them once again to start the second half as they scored just three points from the free throw line in more than nine and a half minutes, again allowing the Tigers to extend their lead to double digits.
Austin Dierks led the MACA Tigers with 22 points and 15 rebounds, many times keeping the Lakers to just one shot.
Minnewaska earned nearly half of its points from the free throw line, hitting 22-of-26 from the charity stripe, helping to counter the 25 percent field goal shooting.
Austin Giese joined Lieser in double figures as he finished the night with 12, nine of those from the free throw line.
The Lakers are scheduled to host Melrose on Friday night. They were at Sauk Centre last night, Tuesday.
STREETERS STOP LAKERS
Minnewaska dropped to 2-2 on the season with a 70-58 loss to Sauk Centre Tuesday night as the Mainstreeters outscored the Lakers by seven in the second half to stretch their five-point lead to a 12-point victory.
It was a close contest early on with the teams tied at 15, but Sauk Centre took advantage of a scoring drought by the Lakers to take a 12-point lead in the first half.
Minnewaska rallied back to cut their deficit to five at the half, but the Mainstreeters again cruised ahead, increasing their lead to 15 in the second half before the Lakers chipped it back to 12.
Three Lakers hit double figures in the loss as Austin Lieser led with 16, Austin Ostrander 14 and Jake Amundson 11.
Nick Adams scored 21 points for the Mainstreeters and Patrick Knoblach added 20.
