Alexandria gymnastics: Cardinals defeat Brainerd

Senior Briquelle Bowden put together the top all-around performance as the Cardinal gymnastics team opened the season with a 135.5-132.95 win over Brainerd Thursday.

“What a great start [to] the season,” said head coach Becca Cederberg. “The Cardinals started off the night strong on vault.

“Some big vaults came from Hannah Wendel and Bowden, who shared the first place spot with 9.2.”

Wendel’s 9.2 on the vault was a personal best.

Bowden also took first on the bars with an 8.55 and the beam with a 9.0, while Wendel claimed first in floor exercise with a 9.025.

“The Cards headed to the bars, where they swung big,” said Cederberg. “Bowden led the team to a first place bar routine, and Tahlia Bowden swung her way into third.”

Sweeping most of the top finishes also allowed the Cardinals to take three of the top for all-around spots as B. Bowden topped the field with a 35.45, Wendel finished third with a 34.2 and T. Bowden was fourth with a 34.1.

Alexandria hosted Morris last night, Tuesday, and will be at Fergus Falls on Friday.
