DNR to hold earth materials lease sale

A public sealed-bid auction to award an earth materials lease for extracting and producing gravel on state-managed lands will be held at 1 p.m., on Tuesday, Dec. 11, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR).

A public sealed-bid auction to award an earth materials lease for extracting and producing gravel on state-managed lands will be held at 1 p.m., on Tuesday, Dec. 11, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR). The auction will take place in the fourth floor conference room at DNR’s Central Office, 500 Lafayette Road, St. Paul, Minn. 55155.

An earth materials lease is subject to special conditions including environmental protections and controls, and reclamation of the site. The lessee must carry specified insurance. Minimum annual production quantities also typically apply to earth materials leases.

The site being awarded is on Wildlife Road in Pine County, 2-1/2 miles west of Sturgeon Lake and one quarter mile south of County Road 46. The lease area covers about 16 acres and contains an estimated 200,000 cubic yards of aggregate material. No significant mining has occurred here. Site photos, test hole and sample data are available for review.

Details on the public bid offering, site information, bid form and instructions and a sample lease document is at www.dnr.state.mn.us/lands_minerals/aggregate_lease.html.

The DNR currently manages 32 earth materials leases throughout Minnesota in order to conserve aggregate resources, minimize environmental impact, and ensure a post-mining reclamation plan. The goal is to create a natural appearing and functioning landscape that is safe, stable and available for future recreation and potential alternative revenue options.
