Alexandria boys' hockey: Cardinals, Storm deadlock at 2-2Two third-period goals by Sartell left the game in an overtime tie
The Alexandria boys’ hockey team saw a 1-0 lead disappear in the third period as the Cardinals settled for a 2-2 tie against Sartell-St. Stephen on Tuesday night.
Alexandria’s Tom Schmidt converted on a goal in the opening period off assists from Jack Wensman and Aaron Steidl. That’s how things went into the third before Sartell got a goal from Andrew Lindmeier. Toby Helgeson responded for Alexandria with a goal off assists from Ryan Marciniak and Brady Bast during a 5-on-3 power play.
The Sabres were able to add the equalizer later in the third period. Tyler Minkel did the damage at 16:43 as the two teams skated into overtime. That’s how things ended as neither team could find the back of the net in the first Central Lakes Conference game for both teams.
It was a bittersweet tie for the Cardinals after they dominated the final frame in every area but on the scoreboard. Alexandria outshot the Sabres 25-6 in the third but only had the one goal to show for it.
“The third period was one of the best periods this year,” head coach Scott Woods said. “The only thing missing was a third goal to win the game.”
The Cardinals evened their record at 1-1-1 with the tie.
