Alexandria girls' hockey: Cardinals tie Central Lakes leaders

Alexandria battled Sartell/Sauk Rapids-Rice to a 2-2 overtime tie

The Cardinal girls skated to a 2-2 overtime tie with Central Lakes Conference leader Sartell/Sauk Rapids on the road Tuesday night, rallying back from a 2-0 first period deficit.

“After spotting the Stormin’ Sabres to an 0-2 lead after one period of play, the Cardinals cranked up the machine and battled back, outshooting the hometown team 22-8 in the second period,” said Card head coach Andy Shriver, “despite having to kill off a five minute penalty.”

That offensive blast resulted in a Mari Wosepka goal off a faceoff, with assists from Rachel Drew and Kaila Dewanz, cutting the Sabre lead in half.

“The third period was again controlled by the Cards,” said the coach, “and the 14-3 shot advantage put Madi Houska in position to hoist the tying goal about four minutes into the period.”

Both teams had their opportunities to score in overtime, but neither team could convert.

“With Sartell finishing one and Alex two in the conference last year, last night’s tie sets up what could be a conference championship game later in the year,” pointed out Shriver.

“Amy Jost turned back 22 of 24 shots in goal,” he added, “[while] going head-to-head with a top goalie in the conference.

“Shaneé Herd led a strong Cardinal defensive corps at both ends of the rink.”

Alexandria was at Brainerd last night, Thursday, and will be hosting Willmar next Thursday.
