A Christmas tradition of more than 30 years greeted both children and adults this past Saturday night as actors and actresses from churches around the area presented the Living Nativity in front of First Lutheran Church on Douglas Street.
More than 400 cars drove by and an additional 100-200 people walked the sidewalks to take in the scene on a beautiful December night. They were greeted by sheep, donkeys, goats and camels that joined the actors and actresses that filled 150 roles throughout the three-hour event.
The sheep and donkeys came from a farm in the Alexandria area, but the camels and goats had a lot longer road to travel. They came from a small town near Brookings, South Dakota.
“We watched many cars drive through and then park and walk back to get a closer look at the camels,” organizing committee member Pat Kalina said. “Both children and adults enjoyed their addition.”
It takes an estimated 200 volunteers from start to finish to pull off the Living Nativity every December. It is a process that starts eight months in advance with an organizing committee that meets monthly.
