A year after finishing one game away from the state tournament, the Alexandria girls’ hockey team is looking to take things one step further.
And to do that, the Cardinals will have to rely on a veteran group of players that includes senior forwards Shelby Iverson, Madi Houska and Becca Illies, as well as defensive line that includes Anna Carlsen and Shaneé Herd.
Iverson was the leading point-getter for the Redbirds last season with an average of 1.29 points per game. She had 17 goals and 14 assists in a season that saw the Cards finish 13-13-1 overall and earn the Section 6A runner-up trophy.
Alexandria’s Illies is also back after finishing as the second leading scorer with 11 goals and 18 assists for a 1.21 points per game average.
Herd was the fourth leading scorer on the squad with 3 goals and 12 assists, while Melissa Drown, a junior, had seven goals and three assists.
Alexandria has already started its season better than last year, jumping to a 3-3-1 record, with losses to three Twin Cities teams – two of which are in the state rankings. They already have decisive wins over section opponents Fergus Falls and Detroit Lakes.
They faced another state ranked team in Simley last Thursday night.
In the early going of this season, the Cardinals are in second place in the Central Lakes Conference standings behind Sartell/Sauk Rapids-Rice. They finished as CLC runners-up last year to the Storm ‘N’ Sabres as well.
