Sixth year head coach Scott Woods, whose team finished third in the Central Lakes Conference last season, is looking for a step upward this year as the Cardinal boys’ hockey team returns its top goalie, nearly every defenseman and several top forwards.
“We need to find some offense,” said Woods, whose team averaged 2.5 goals per game last year and finished 12-12-2.
To help do that, Woods will be relying on returning starting forwards Tom Schmidt, Jack Wensman and Patrick Leary, all seniors, along with juniors Matt Resch and Toby Helgeson.
On defense, senior goalie Ben Allen returns, as do junior defenders Kevin Finley, Andrew Rentschler and Aaron Steidl, as well as sophomore defenseman Christian Canavati.
Woods will also be looking at new prospects Ryan Marciniak, Parker Revering and Alec Wosepka to add to the team’s depth.
The Cardinals are hoping to return to the state tournament after a one-year absence, but will have to contend with Little Falls and Fergus Falls, both veteran teams of state tournament play.
In Central Lakes Conference play, Woods expects to be among the leaders, along with Brainerd and Sartell.
