Led by three state entrants, the 2012-2013 wrestling season holds great promise for the Cardinals.
“Early season drills have shown that this year’s team will be improved over last year’s team,” said head coach Tom Ellison. “Wrestlers in the practice room this year have shown plenty of determination and a strong work ethic that will serve them well during the year.”
Junior Trent Piepenburg, who will wrestle at 113 pounds, opens the season ranked No. 4 at his weight in Class AAA, while sophomore Justin Cumberbatch is ranked No. 5 at 220 pounds.
Tony Hubbard, who also competed in last year’s state tournament, will compete at 145 pounds for the Cardinals, and is favored as one of the top wrestlers at his weight class.
“Also looking to take a step forward this season will be senior Andrew Moske, wrestling in the 182-pound weight class,” said Ellison. “Other juniors on the team include Jacob Schiltgen, Gage Sonczalla and Shawn Nelson.
“Piepenburg, Schiltgen, Sonczalla and Nelson all finished with high placing in the section tournament last season and look to improve on last year’s performance by advancing to the section final.”
Ellison looks for sophomores Joe Brown, Tristan Johnson, Jake Nienaber, Dylan Kriese, Brandon Johnson, Dustin Neu and Mike Schluter to help out the varsity squad, while freshmen Mitch Kremer, Adam Johnson, Ben Johnson, Chris Jorud and Blake Olhausen will also compete for roster spots.
The Brainerd Warriors could be in the hunt for the conference title this season along with Willmar and Sartell, while the section team favorites may include Brainerd, Sartell, Little Falls and Moorhead.
