Strong veteran lineup bodes well for a team that sent two to state
With the loss of only one senior to graduation, Cardinal head gymnastics coach Becca Cederberg is looking forward to the upcoming season.
“We’re really excited,” she said. “We are starting the season healthy and with a very strong varsity line-up. We can’t wait to see what the season brings.”
Last season was filled with milestones for the Cards, who broke the school record for a team score with a 141.65 and finished the year in second place at the Central Lakes Conference meet for the first time since 1989. They captured runner-up honors at the Section 6A meet as well.
Cederberg’s team also earned the gold academic award for their scholastic achievements.
Along with assistant coaches Jessica Anderson and Allison Vogel, Cederberg is excited to return six letter winners, all with sparkling credentials.
Two of the top performers – Tahlia and Briquelle Bowden – both earned trips to the State Class A meet last season.
Tahlia, a freshman, competed on the vault, beam, floor and all-around at state, finishing 19th, while Briquelle, a senior, competed on the bars.
Juniors Rachel Sjostrand and Anna Spanbauer will help anchor the team as well as sophomores Bria Schueler and Hannah Wendel.
Joining the varsity this year is Jana Roste, a sophomore, who will round out the squad.
Cederberg hopes her Cardinal squad will be the one that other teams in the Central Lakes Conference will be chasing, but they will have competition from St. Cloud Tech and St. Cloud Apollo in that arena.
In the section, Melrose and Willmar could pose a threat to the Cardinals’ chances to claim a title, but after a second place finish last year, Alexandria looks to be right in the hunt for the crown.
