As Alexandria gets set to open the 2012-2013 girls’ basketball season, head coach Wendy Kohler is working to get her team ready to battle Fergus Falls for the Central Lakes Conference title once again.
“The Cards will look to reload to contend with section favorite Fergus,” she said. “Look for the Cards to crank things up on both ends of the court.
“A big key for the Cards will be to keep getting better as we develop our team this season,” Kohler pointed out.
Last year the Otters went 16-0 on their way to their second straight CLC title. Alexandria finished second both seasons and Fergus Falls defeated the Cardinals in the Section 8AAA finals both years.
Alexandria will be without three key players lost to graduation in Lauren Trumm, Cara Wood and Whitney Gesell. Trumm was the Cardinal MVP for 2011-2012, while Wood was the playmaker of the year and Trumm was the defensive player of the year. All three received conference honors as well.
The Cardinals won’t be without talent as they return seniors Dani Strater, Jess Syvrud and Kalli Bowser, and juniors Amanda Christianson and Amanda Gould to the team.
Kohler also expects great things from new junior prospects Sarah Bruzek, Emily Thul, Karly Betterman, Jaylen Olson-Rpdel, Sam Fredericks and Alyssa Friedrich.
Kohler, who is in her 28th year as head coach, expects her squad to be among the favorites in the conference, battling Fergus Falls, St. Cloud Tech, Sartell and Willmar for the title, with Thief River, Fergus Falls, Detroit Lakes and the Cardinals all in the hunt for the Section 8AAA crown.
