Minnesota Farm Bureau commends Senate for passing farm bill

The Minnesota Farm Bureau Federation (MFBF) applauds the U.S. Senate for moving forward to complete work on the bipartisan farm bill, the Agriculture Reform, Jobs and Food Act of 2013. The bill provides needed risk management tools and a viable economic safety net for America's farmers and ranchers.

"We appreciate the Senate's decision to protect and strengthen the federal crop insurance program and not reduce its funding, as well as the approval of a commodity program that provides farmers varied safety net options," said MFBF President Kevin Paap. "This proposed bill will encourage farmers to follow market signals. Most importantly, the bill is fiscally responsible."

"We thank Senator Klobuchar and Senator Franken for their support," said Paap. "We encourage the House to move forward with its farm bill legislation. Timely completion of the farm bill will help provide farmers and ranchers certainty for the coming year. The current farm bill extension expires in September, and we need to avoid kicking the can down the road and complete the five year farm bill now."

Minnesota Farm Bureau is comprised of 78 local Farm Bureaus across Minnesota. Members make their views known to political leaders, state government officials, special interest groups and the general public. Programs for young farmers and ranchers develop leadership skills and improve farm management. Promotion and Education Committee members work with programs such as Ag in the Classroom and safety education for children.
