Fall gardening workshop opportunities
I hope you have been surviving our recent very rainy weather without much damage. My office has seen better days. I came in this morning, not to find a plethora of specimens awaiting identification, but to find a flood all over my desk, computer and papers, stretching from my inner office to regions beyond. What a mess! I planned to write a column about drought tolerant plants this week, but my muse seems to have washed away with the rain. So, instead I will let you know about gardening classes offered this fall through the Extension office and Alexandria Schools Community Education.
On Monday, September 20, join Nutrition Educator Sharon Bisson for a "Summer Produce Celebration." Learn to prepare healthy, flavorful, wonderful meals using your summer produce. Class meets at Jefferson High School from 6-7:30 p.m. Registration is $11.
Starting Tuesday, September 21, and continuing every third Tuesday of the month thereafter, Lunch and Learn in the Garden workshops will take place at the Douglas County Extension Meeting Room from noon to 12:50 p.m. The first session's topic will be on Fall Gardening Chores. In the following months, the topics will be selected from pressing issues/questions and attendees' interest. Lunch and Learn in the Garden is free, just bring a lunch to eat and any gardening questions and interests you have.
On Tuesday, September 28, join me for "All About Fall Bulb Planting for Spring Blooms." Learn what bulbs are hardy in our zone and how to plant these bulbs. Discover how easy it is to force spring bulbs for January and February indoor blooming. Class will be from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Douglas County Extension Meeting Room. Registration is $10.
On Thursday, October 14, learn everything you always wanted to know about growing berries in Minnesota. Master gardener and beekeeper Lewis Struthers will teach you how to grow delicious berries and which varieties are the best for our area. Class time is 7 to 9 p.m. at Discovery Middle School. Registration is $12.
On Thursday, October 28, Lewis will present "Apple Trees and More!" Learn how to care for your fruit trees and how to protect trees and fruit from disease and insects. This class will take place at Discovery Middle School from 7 to 9 p.m. Registration is $11.
On Tuesday, November 16, join me in the Extension Meeting Room for "Feeding Birds in Winter." Learn to identify common Minnesota winter birds, discover how seed choice affects the birds you attract to your yard, and make a basic bird feeder to get you started on your bird feeding adventure. This class will take place from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Registration is $14.
