YMCA and Knute Nelson team up
The Alexandria YMCA and Knute Nelson in Alexandria will participate in National Senior Health and Fitness Day on Wednesday, May 29.
Senior Health and Fitness Day is focused on health, prevention, fitness and fun. Participants will get support and information to engage in activities and events related to healthy eating and living, screenings and physical activity.
The YMCA and Grand Arbor invite community members age 60 or older to enjoy activities throughout the day at both locations at no cost.
"Older adults at all fitness levels are encouraged to come and check out what we have to offer here at the Y," said Kali Schmitz, Alexandria Area YMCA health and wellness director.
Scheduled activities at the Y will take place from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. and at the Nelson Wellness Center, Grand Arbor location from 12 to 4 p.m. Activities will include sample land and aquatic classes, specialty workshops on diabetes and therapy, pickle ball, an outdoor bicycle course and more.
Blood pressure tests will be taken free of charge. The Alexandria Evening Lions will be onsite accepting used eye glasses as donations.
"Our goals for Senior Day are to make exercise fun, to increase awareness of the benefits of a regular exercise program, and to encourage older adults to take advantage of the many health and fitness programs offered in our community," said Angie Johnson, Grand Arbor health and wellness director.
In a collaborative partnership agreement, the Y and Nelson Wellness Center allow members to attend group exercise classes at either location, at no additional cost.
The partnership is designed to encourage increased participation in programming tailored to older adults of the Alexandria area community and collaboration among nonprofits. To learn more about Senior Day, contact Jackie or Kali at the Y, (320) 834-9622, or Angie at Grand Arbor, (320) 759-4613.
