Wrestlers second to state-ranked Eagles
The Alexandria wrestlers finished second to a powerful Totino-Grace team during the Litchfield tournament Saturday as Taylor Morical, Charlie Kirscht and Tom Bouressa all captured individual titles.
Morical opened action with a bye, then swept his competition with a pair of pins.
Kirscht started hot with a pair of pins, then defeated Quinton Thiele of Totino-Grace by a major decision to win his weight class.
Bouressa had a bye to open his day, then recorded two pins - one in the first period and the other in the second - for his championship.
Josh Hobbs finished second for the Cardinals and Josh Betterman placed third.
"Josh Hobbs wrestled well enough during the day to gain the finals, but then was defeated by state-ranked Nick Schuler of Totino-Grace," said head coach Tom Ellison. "Josh Betterman had a special day as he recorded three wins on the day for a third place finish and pushed his career win total over 100."
Kyle Fulghum had a 3-1 day to earn a third place finish, while Cole Ellison, Lucas Betterman and Isaac Meyer all started the day with first round wins, only to lose in the semifinals.
All three finished fourth.
Gage Sonczalla competed in the 103 pound weight class, finishing fifth, along with Anthony McQueen, Riley Gustafson, Adam Klinkner and Andy Bouressa.
"I felt our team was well prepared for this tournament as they were able to compete hard even into the third period," said Ellison. "Given the fact that we had to fit practice time around the Thanksgiving break, we spent most of our time getting the team in shape to wrestle.
"As we return to practice this week, more time will be devoted to perfecting technique that will help the team compete at even higher levels."
Tom Bouressa is ranked No. 2 in the Class AAA wrestling pre-season polls at 285 pounds
Taylor Morical is ranked No. 4 at 119 pounds
Charlie Kirscht is ranked No. 4 at 145 pounds
