Weekend drowning on Lake Lobster
The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call at Wildridge Campgrounds on Lobster Lake on Sunday, August 3, after 15-year-old Brennon David Johnson from Montevideo did not return from kayaking on the lake. According to his mother, Jazell Holverson, Johnson went kayaking around 12:30 p.m. and had not returned when the call was placed shortly before 5 p.m.
Douglas County Sheriff’s Deputies, along with a Minnesota Conservation Officer, used several watercrafts to search for Johnson. A Code Red was activated in the Lobster Lake area, which brought out numerous private boat owners to join the search.
Shortly before 6 p.m., Johnson and his kayak were located by private boaters helping with the search on the Northwest side of the lake. Deputies responded to the scene, where it appeared that the victim had capsized and may have been unable to exit the kayak. Johnson was still secured in his life jacket when he was found but was unresponsive and pronounced dead at the scene. The Douglas County medical examiner determined the death to be an accidental drowning.
Responding agencies and individuals included Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, Minnesota DNR, Minnesota State Patrol, North Ambulance, and several private boaters from the Lobster Lake area.
