WCA wins in five sets over Underwood
A five set victory for the West Central Area volleyball team over Underwood in their first match of the season has given them more than just a win in the stat column.
Starting off the season with a hard fought victory should give the Knights experience they can use for the rest of the season.
"This was quite the first game of the season," head coach Beth Hill said. "I am really glad we got this experience right away. Five set matches challenge us in a lot of ways that will make us a stronger team."
The Knights took an early lead in the match after they won the first two sets 25-18 and 25-23.
It appeared they would get out of the hot gym early after leading in the third set, but Underwood rallied and won 28-26. Then they won the fourth set 25-22 to put the entire match on the last set.
"The fourth set was similar to the third," Hill said. "We got a little too tense and worried about making mistakes."
But the Knights would prevail, winning the deciding fifth set 16-14 and started the season on a winning note.
"I am incredibly proud of the confidence the girls showed in the fifth set," Hill said. "All 10 players on our team and the JV and c-squad girls were confident and contributing to our level of play."
Alysa Aanerud led the team with 13 kills, followed by Holly Van Kempen with 10. Christina Kruize helped the offense with 23 assists.
Courtney Lock and Christenson helped keep many of the Knights' rallies alive with 16 digs each. Doranna Blascyk and Christina Kruize each had 13 digs.
The Knights' home opener is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Tuesday, September 10 against Osakis.
