WCA holds off LPGE on the road

The West Central Area boys’ basketball team survived a scare on the road in a 54-52 win over Long Prairie-Grey Eagle on Tuesday.

The Knights held a 10 point lead at halftime and continued on that roll for much of the second half. But LPGE cut the lead to only two points after scoring on seven of their last nine possessions of the game. The hot shooting did not carry LPGE to the win, however, as WCA held on for the two-point victory.

“You can’t relax against such a good shooting team like Long Prairie,” WCA head coach Kraig Hunter said. “They hit some really tough shots in the last couple of minutes to make it closer than it should have. Give them credit, they didn’t quit.”

WCA had no problem running its offense, shooting 52 percent as a team from the field. The Knights held LPGE to 38 percent on field goals, but the Thunder shooters made up the deficit by going 10-for-20 on three-point baskets.

Jay Zimmerman led the Knights with 21 points and 16 rebounds. Dakotah Kashmark finished with 15 points and five assists.

LPGE’s Derek Eberle came off the bench to lead its offense with 18 points.
