Voters to shape township government next Tuesday

Get ready to help government at its most grass-roots level.

Elections will take place next Tuesday, March 11 at 18 of the 20 townships in Douglas County. (Brandon and Miltona townships will have their elections this November.)

Here’s a look at what’s happening at the township level:

ALEXANDRIA

Two incumbent supervisors, Julie Feuling and Russell Niskanen, have filed for re-election and face no challengers. Polls will be open from noon to 8 p.m. with the annual meeting to follow.

BELLE RIVER

Jodi Niblett filed for the remainder of the clerk term (long-time clerk Geri Rindahl is stepping down) and Doug Steidl, incumbent, filed for supervisor. Voting will be open from 5 to 8 p.m. at St. Nicholas Church in Belle River. The township’s annual meeting will be held after the polls close.

BRANDON

Although it will not hold an election, Brandon Township will have its annual meeting on Tuesday, Minnesota Township Day, at 7 p.m., at the Brandon Community Center.

The key agenda item is setting the tax levy for 2015. Plus, with the township’s conclusion of the payment of the sewer debt service bond in 2014, some new policies for road blacktop and resurfacing policies and changes in the township’s dust control chloride policy are being proposed.

Other agenda items include: continuing support for Brandon Fire Department and Alexandria Area Economic Development Commission, updates on Xcel Energy’s use of township roads and the plan for Chippewa Park. Residents are invited to bring their concerns to this meeting.

CARLOS

Incumbent supervisor Rodney Meyers has filed for re-election, along with incumbent clerk, Rebecca Anderson. They face no challengers on the ballot. Polls will be open from 4 to 8 p.m. with the annual meeting to follow.

EVANSVILLE

Incumbent clerk Kim Ostlund and incumbent supervisor Tony Wright filed for re-election. Voters will also be asked if the township should appoint the clerk and treasurer positions. Polls will be open from 5 to 8 p.m. with the annual meeting to follow.

HOLMES CITY

Incumbent supervisor Arthur Isackson has filed for re-election, along with incumbent clerk, Terrance Cooper. Polls will be open from 5 to 8 p.m. with the annual meeting set for 8:15 p.m.

HUDSON

Roxane Westergren (incumbent) and Jeffrey Tvrdik have filed for the position of supervisor and Joan Eastlund (incumbent) has filed for clerk. Polls will be open from 4 to 8 p.m. with the annual meeting to follow at Forada City Hall.

IDA

Michael Steidl has filed for supervisor and incumbent clerk, Barbara Kilgore has filed for re-election. Polling will take place at the Ida Township Hall from 3 to 8 p.m.

LAGRAND

Steven Schmidt filed for the supervisor position. The clerk position is appointed. Polling will take place from noon to 8 p.m. at the LaGrand Town Hall.

LAKE MARY

Nichole Boyden, incumbent, filed for the clerk position and incumbent James Schmidt is running for supervisor. They face no challengers on the ballot. Polls will be open from 2 to 8 p.m. at Lake Mary Town Hall and the annual meeting is set for 8:15 p.m.

LEAF VALLEY

Brent Ost, incumbent supervisor, filed for re-election, along with incumbent clerk, Pamela Cuperus. Polls will be open from 3 to 8 p.m. at Leaf Valley Town Hall with the annual meeting to follow.

LUND

Only the incumbents have filed for the two positions up for election: Troy Hart for supervisor and Tom Reddick for clerk. Polls will be open from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Melby Town Hall.

MILLERVILLE

Supervisor Larry Carlson filed and is the incumbent. Marilyn Bitzan filed for clerk and is the incumbent. Voting will take place from 3 to 8 p.m. at the Millerville Fire Hall with the annual meeting to follow.

MOE

Clerk Todd Egenes and Supervisor Lynn Bushard both filed for re-election and face no challengers on the ballot. Polls will be open from 5o to 8 p.m. at Moe Township Hall. The annual meeting will take place after that.

ORANGE

Jennifer Dietrich has filed for re-election to the clerk position. No one has filed for the one open supervisor position. The township annual meeting will take place at 3 p.m. at the Pollard Community Center in Osakis. Polls will open immediately following the annual meeting and will remain open until 8 p.m.

OSAKIS

Brian Niehoff has filed for the supervisor position and Dawn McNeal for clerk/treasurer. They’re both incumbents and will be running unopposed. Polls will be open from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Pollard Community Center in Osakis and the annual meeting will follow.

SOLEM

Curt Hamen, incumbent supervisor, filed and faces no challengers. Bruce Wohlforth filed for a two-year supervisor term and is also unopposed. Jaclyn Halvorson refiled for clerk. The annual meeting will take place from 4 to 5 p.m. at the Runestone Park Barn and polls will be open from 5 to 8 p.m.

SPRUCE HILL

Supervisor Larry Skoglund has filed, along with incumbent clerk, Colleen Burquest. They’re each running unopposed. Polls will be open from 1 to 8 p.m. The annual meeting is set for 8:15 p.m.

URNESS

William Frischmon, who was appointed to a supervisor position last fall when Rachel Johnson resigned, is running unopposed. Judi Andreasen, the incumbent clerk, also faces no challengers. A question will also appear on the ballot, asking voters whether the clerk and treasurer positions should be appointed instead of elected. The annual meeting will take place at 4 p.m. at Urness Town Hall and polls will be open from 5 to 8 p.m.
