Volleyball opener goes to Marshall
The Alexandria volleyball team opened its season against one of the best teams in Class AA on Tuesday night.
The Cardinals welcomed the No. 2 ranked Marshall Tigers to town and gained an early advantage by taking game one 25-17. That would be the only win of the match as Marshall came storming back to win the next three games by scores of 25-18, 25-21, 28-26.
Despite the loss, head coach Becky Anderson was happy with the way her team competed against one of the better teams in the state.
"Although a loss is never a team's ideal outcome, the girls played tough and we learned a lot as a team," Anderson said. "We can strengthen our weaknesses and continue to improve on our strengths. Hard work for the rest of the week's practices will help prepare for the first tournament this weekend in Eden Prairie."
Sam Dale posted a match-high 19 digs for Alexandria and also contributed with eight kills. Ari Carlson attacked the net with nine kills on the night to lead the Cardinals in that category. Sam Trumm also chipped in with eight kills, while controlling the net with five blocks.
The No. 10 ranked Cardinals will head to the metro area this weekend to take part in the Eden Prairie Invite starting tomorrow, Saturday, at 9 a.m.
