Vogeler named MVP for Alex boys

The Alexandria basketball team wrapped up its state qualifying season Monday night by holding a postseason banquet and recognizing players with team awards.

John Vogeler’s senior season wrapped up with him being named the Cardinals’ Most Valuable Player. He played in every game for Alexandria in 2013-2014 and wound up leading the team in scoring with 477 total points and an average of 17.7 per game.

Vogeler also reached a career milestone as he scored his 1,000th career varsity points in the first round of the Section 8AAA tournament versus Little Falls. He finished with a career total of 1,060 points.

The Cardinals selected senior David Krivanek as the Defensive MVP this season. Playing as a guard, Krivanek was second on the team in steals with 39 and third on the team in rebounds with 109 in 27 games.

Joe Gorghuber was named the Most Improved Player for the Cardinals. He led the team in rebounds with 145 and was fourth on the team in scoring with 229 points over 26 games.

Brandon Bistodeau and Vogeler were named all-conference, and Gorghuber, Chase Kohler and Krivanek were handed all-conference honorable mention.

Gorghuber and Kris Setterstrom were voted the team captains for the Cardinals next season.
