VFW rallies for a sweep
The Alexandria VFW 15s baseball team swept a doubleheader against Cold Spring on Wednesday at Knute Nelson Ballpark to improve its record to 9-3 this season.
One win in two games the night before for Alexandria against Morris meant they won three out of four games in a 24 hour span. In the first game against Cold Spring on Wednesday, a 4-1 win for Alexandria, Brock Anderson pitched six innings and allowed zero earned runs.
He felt strong on the mound and said his defense made some plays behind him.
“It felt good, the control was good,” Brock said. “I threw the fastball and curveball for strikes.”
Tryg Burgau went 2-for-3 in the game with a double and two runs to lead the Alexandria offense. Conner Hammerback also scored a run in the game, and Hunter Schoenrock went 2-for-3.In the second game, Alexandria trailed most of the game before it scored two runs in the fifth inning to tie Cold Spring at 4-4. Then in the sixth, Blake Anderson delivered a two-run single to give Alexandria a 6-4 lead.Hammerback pitched a scoreless seventh to preserve a doubleheader sweep for Alexandria.Blake Anderson said he was able to take the low pitch and drive it deep enough to fall in between the second baseman and the left fielder to give Alexandria its first lead of the game.“It was a low and outside pitch, and I just stayed through the ball and drove it to center,” Blake said.With a 9-3 record, the VFW 15s feel good about their start this season. But they still hope to make some improvements through the rest of their summer season.“It’s definitely a good record, but we can play better,” Blake Anderson said. “Our offense is not as great as it was, so we can definitely improve in that area.”The players said they have set their goals to reach the state tournament. The playoffs begin in the second half of July.“Get pretty far in that,” Brock Anderson said about the end of the season tournament. “We want to get there (to state).”
The Alexandria VFW 15s split a doubleheader against Morris after winning the first game 6-1 and dropping the second 12-11.Micah Christenson led the Alexandria offense in the first game by going 1-for-1 with a double, two walks and two runs scored. Brady Burgau and Jake Drew each also went 1-for-3 in the first game.Alexandria dropped the second game 11-12. Noah Berglin went 2-for-3 with two runs to lead the offense, while John Urman scored two runs on two walks.
