The Alexandria VFW 16s finished the 2013 season by splitting four games at the state tournament last weekend in Ely.

Alexandria won games against Ely and Brainerd and lost to Northfield and Hutchinson. After playing in the state tournament, they finished the season 32-13.

"We won two, lost two, and played pretty well generally speaking," head coach Orin Schueler said. "We kind of got a real close call in the last game that kind of shut our rally down, but it was a very good tournament."

Schueler, who finished his final year as coach of the VFW team, said he was happy with the players' efforts this year. Alexandria won the district tournament, finished strong in the Marshall Tournament earlier this year and were about to play for second place at their own tournament when it was rained out.

"This was my last year and it was very gratifying to have the guys work so hard and play so well," Schueler said. "I think we had about three or four guys hitting over .400...these kids have come on and a lot of them will be helping the high school and Legion teams in the future, that's for sure."

In the final game of the tournament last Friday, Alexandria was unable to overcome a five-run top of the seventh inning for Hutchinson.

Alexandria answered that by scoring four runs of their own in the bottom of the seventh after Travis Krueger, Parker Revering, Kris Setterstrom and Brayden Amundson all crossed the plate. The tying run was at second base when Michael Helgeson tried to take third on a passed ball. The Hutchinson catcher gathered himself and threw on to third, where Helgeson was called out on a very close play.

Cody Weisel was 2-for-4 in the game with three RBIs.

Setterstrom started the game, giving up five earned runs in six innings. Danny Kuhn pitched an inning, giving up three earned runs.

The Alexandria pitching began to tire after playing two games on Thursday and two on Friday.

"After the fourth (game) of pitching it was getting thin, but our pitchers did a great job for the innings they threw," Schueler said. "You use a lot of pitchers coming through the losers' bracket."

ALEXANDRIA 6,

BRAINERD 5

Alexandria won their first game last Friday against Brainerd thanks to a sixth inning rally.

Brainerd was up 5-2 heading into the sixth inning. That is when Spencer Lucas, Krueger and Revering all scored to tie the game at 5-5. Then Alexandria took the lead with a Kaden Anderson run in the top of the seventh inning.

Setterstrom was 1-for-4 in the game with three RBIs, and Anderson scored two of Alexandria's six runs.

Cole McLaughlin pitched two innings in the game, giving up two earned runs. Micah Hedstrom gave up two earned runs in five innings, only giving up four hits with two strikeouts.

ALEXANDRIA 3,

NORTHFIELD 6

Alexandria was handed their first loss in the state tournament in their second Thursday game against Northfield.

Kuhn started the game, pitching all seven innings and giving up five earned runs on nine hits.

"Kuhn was a tough luck loser in the first game," Schueler said. "We had some chances to beat Northfield, but we didn't capitalize with guys on base. He pitched a very good game."

Amundson, Weisel and Anderson had an RBI each in the game. Amundson also scored two of Alexandria's three runs.

ALEXANDRIA 8,

ELY 1

Playing against the host team in the first round of the state tournament, Alexandria scored eight runs and held Ely to just four hits.

Hedstrom pitched five scoreless innings for Alexandria, allowing only two hits with five strikeouts. McLaughlin also came on for two innings of relief, giving up one earned run on two hits with four strikeouts.

Revering was 2-for-3 in the game with two RBIs and a run scored.
