VFW 16s start tournament with a loss

The Alexandria VFW 16s baseball team took an early 2-0 lead against Shakopee but were unable to maintain it in a 4-3 loss for its first game of its home weekend tournament on Friday afternoon in Carlos.

Michael Helgeson doubled in the first two runs of the game in the third inning for a 2-0 Alexandria lead. This score held until the fifth inning when Shakopee took a 3-2 lead.

Alexandria tied the game at 3-3 with a RBI double by Jared Gessel in the sixth inning, but Shakopee scored a run in the bottom of the seventh with two outs for a walk-off 4-3 win.

Wyatt Wittenburg started the game and allowed three runs over five innings.

The VFW 16s still have two more games in the tournament on Saturday. Here is the rest of the tournament’s weekend schedule:
