Variety of opportunities available to seniors
There are lots of things happening for area senior citizens to take part in.
Check out these opportunities:
Join us at the Douglas County Fair. We will have a Douglas County Senior Booth in the Runestone Community Center. Come and check out all the new and exciting information we will have to offer. There will also be a program on Thursday, August 20 announcing Douglas County's Outstanding Senior for 2009. The program will be at 3 p.m. at the 4-H Centennial Stage. Treats will be served.
Project Community Connect will take place on Thursday, August 27 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the United Methodist Church. A light lunch will be served in conjunction with the mobile food drop, free blood pressure checks and the ability to connect with the services that are available to seniors in our area. If you are worried about your winter heating bills, have questions regarding social security or Medicare or just want to see what senior services are available in Douglas County, come out and see me.
Let's Go Fishing with Seniors offers free boating or fishing excursions for all seniors, veterans and disabled populations. Outings are scheduled daily during the spring, summer and fall months. Each excursion is approximately 2 hours. We provide the rods, reels, tackle, live bait, pontoon, life jackets and even refreshments.
Riverboat Cruise with the St Croix Boat & Packet Company on September 15. Join other Douglas County seniors for a cruise on the St. Croix. Dine while quietly gliding up the river. Leaves Kmart in Alexandria at 9 a.m. and returns at 5:30 p.m. Cost is $56 per person. This includes a two-hour cruise, luncheon buffet and transportation.
Long Lake Theater show on October 24 in Park Rapids. This trip includes a Halloween show, lunch and transportation. Leaves Kmart at 11:30 a.m., lunch is at 1 p.m. and the show is at 3 p.m. Cost is $52 per person.
A Caregiver Support Group meets the second Tuesday of each month at First Lutheran Church in the family room. If you are a caregiver for your spouse, parent or even a child with an illness, you are welcome to join us. We provide education and support to those dealing with caregiving issues.
Nutrition Assistance Program for seniors is a free food program for people ages 60 and older. You must meet income guidelines, live in Minnesota, provide proof of age and show a picture ID. Foods distributed include fruits, vegetables and juice, milk, cheese and egg mix, meat, dry beans, and peanut butter, cereal, rice, instant potatoes or pasta. Preregistration is required.
