UPDATED: Cougars punch ticket to region tourney
The Carlos Cougars needed a late rally but they secured their spot in the Region 14C tournament this past weekend by beating Clarissa 5-2 in the Resorters East playoffs.
That win punched Carlos' ticket to the East title game, where it will play Clarissa again this Sunday at 2 p.m. in Clarissa. Both teams already know they will play in the region tournament and will now be playing for seeding this weekend. Clarissa needs to win twice to win the East title.
The Cougars scored all five of their runs against Clarissa in the seventh inning on Saturday in a game that was started on Friday night but was suspended in the fourth inning. They resumed play with Clarissa leading 2-0 on Saturday.
The Flyers scored both of their runs in the first inning off of starter Nate Hoelscher. He settled in after that and went all nine innings for the win. Hoelscher didn't allow another hit until the ninth inning. He scattered five hits and five walks but got 10 strikeouts to help himself out of trouble. He gave up two singles in the final frame but erased them by striking out the side.
The offense gave him some runs to work with by collecting half of their 12 total hits in the seventh inning. AJ Anderson, Justin Steidl and Jake Tharaldson all singled to load the bases with one out. Aaron Noetzelman then delivered the biggest hit to that point on a two-RBI single that tied the game.
Carlos got its first lead on a passed ball. Jay Schueler and Brad Nyberg added RBI singles after that as the Cougars gained a lead they didn't come close to relinquishing the rest of the way.
The win moved their winning streak to 15 games heading into the East title game this weekend.
*This story originally said Carlos will play Long Prairie on Sunday in the East title game. The Cougars will actually be in Clarissa on Sunday at 2 p.m. to play the Flyers for the championship.
