Home owner Steven Auran was the only person in the house at the time of the strike; he escaped without injury

Alexandria Fire Chief Jeff Karrow reported that the lightning strike blew off the top of the chimney and started a fire in the attic space above the attached garage.

When firefighters arrived, flames were shooting out of the top of the garage, Karrow said.

Damage totals are estimated at $20,000 and the damage was limited to the garage, the chief said.

Firefighters were on scene for about 90 minutes. The Alexandria Police Department also responded to the early morning fire.
