UPDATE 8:30 PM: Difficult driving conditions in Alexandria area tonight

A blast of winter weather is making for difficult travel conditions across west central Minnesota tonight.

According to the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT), driving conditions are difficult on Interstate-94 and state highways between Moorhead and Melrose.


As of 6 p.m. there are several reports of vehicles in ditches in the Alexandria area. MnDOT and law enforcement advise drivers to be prepared for icy patches. Visibility is also reduced due to blowing snow.

Just after 7 p.m. at least three people were injured in a head-on crash near Alexandria on County Road 45.

A winter weather advisory has been issued for west central Minnesota through 6 a.m. Friday. Overnight lows are expected to drop to 15 degrees and strong winds will continue with gusts as high as 40 miles per hour. Wind chills could drop below zero tonight. Snow is expected to continue through the night with total accumulations of 1 to 3 inches, according to the National Weather Service.
