United Way invites holiday giving

The holidays are right around the corner and United Way is excited to share the spirit of giving with others this holiday season. There are many needs in our community. Here are just a few ways you can choose to brighten the day for others around the holidays:

• United Way of Douglas and Pope Counties is teaming up with local businesses and organizations for the annual Toys for Tots toy drive.

Newly purchased, unwrapped gifts will be accepted at the following locations: Menards, The UPS Store, Bell State Bank and Trust, Dunn Brothers Coffee, Viking Savings Bank, Bennigan’s, United Way, all in Alexandria, and Marthaler Chevrolet of Glenwood.

The Jefferson High School (JHS) cheerleaders will also collecting toys at the following athletic events throughout December:

Friday, December 6, 7 p.m., Girls Hockey at RCC.

Tuesday, December 10, 7 p.m., Boys Hockey at RCC.

Thursday, December 12, 6 p.m., Wrestling at JHS.

Tuesday, December 17, 7:30 p.m. Boys Basketball at JHS.

There will also be a collection box in the main office at JHS. All gifts collected at the various locations will be distributed at United Way December 2-23 between 8 and 4 p.m.

• Each year, families, clubs and organizations can adopt families to help with their holiday celebration. United Way matches families to those interested in adopting.

• Warm boots, water-proof mittens, snow pants, coats and quilts are still needed to help keep families warm this season.

• Donations can be made to United Way in honor of a family member, coworker, employee, etc. Donations will help support the 45 programs sponsored by United Way.

Dolly Parton Imagination Library provides books to a child each month for a year; the Monthly Mobile Food Drop ensures that 200-plus families get extra food each month and Backpack Attack sends food home with a hungry child in the evening or over the weekend.
