Two vehicle collision causes death near Garfield

The People's Express medical transport van struck the front end of a truck that turned in front of it on County Road 8 near Moe Hall Road. A 93-year-old male passenger in the van died from his injuries.1 / 2

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call at 1:10 p.m. on Tuesday, June 10, of a two vehicle accident with injuries at County Road 8 and Moe Hall Road.

According to deputies who responded to the accident, Michael Potzmann Jr., 78, of Garfield, was travelling west on County Road 8 in his truck when he tried turning left on Moe Hall Road and collided with a medical transport van from People’s Express, driven by Melissa Runningen, 48, of Ashby, which was travelling east. Both vehicles sustained severe front end damage.

Potzmann and all three occupants of the van were transported to Douglas County Hospital. Elmer Jesness, 93, of Barrett, a passenger of People’s Express, died from his injuries. Both drivers and the additional passenger of the van, Paul Brutlag, 68, of Wendell, were treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Garfield First Responders and North Memorial Ambulance assisted at the scene.
