Two relay titles lead Osakis to fourth in state
Two championship races for the Osakis relays highlighted a fourth place finish for the girls’ track and field team at the Class A state meet on Saturday at Hamline University in St. Paul.
The 4x400 relay team successfully defended its championship from 2013 and the 4x200 also grabbed a top spot.
The 4x200 team of Makayla Hoglin, Brittney Sadlemyer, Abby Stroup and Hannah Szech finished first with a time of 1:45.63. Chatfield was a close second, crossing the line in 1:46.01
The Silverstreaks 4x400 team of Hoglin, Sadlemyer, Samantha Jones and Szech took first with a time of 3:58.46. Szech held off a charging Blue Earth team in the last leg that finished second with a time of 33:58.96.
With Osakis winning both races by a half-second or less, neither team really knew it had won until after the teams crossed the line.
“We weren’t ahead by much throughout the race at all, so we didn’t know until the very end,” Szech said after the 2x200 relay race.
The two first places highlighted another year where the Silverstreaks’ relays ran their best in the finals of the state tournament. Sadlemyer credited the training from the Osakis coaching staff in getting them prepared to run well at state every season.
“We try and peak for this meet,” she said.
The Osakis 4x100 team of Tianna Stanek, Alexa Hoffarth, Taylor Kraemer and Sadlemyer also grabbed a spot on the podium with a fifth place finish with a time of 50.95.
The Silverstreaks’ 4x800 team of Jones, Paige Gabrielson, Brooke Sorenson and Lauren Savageau took 13th with a time of 10:05.35.
Savageau also competed in the 1,600 run Saturday, taking 15th with a time of 5:35.45.
