Tweets about the streets
The Alexandria Street Department may experiment soon with a new technology - Twitter.
It's a free, social networking system or "micro-blogging" service that allows its users to tell other users what they are doing in real time.
Those who sign up for the system send short text-messages - known as "tweets" - to inform others about what they're up to. Millions of people have signed up for the system.
Bryan Bjorgaard, public works coordinator, told the Alexandria City Council that Twitter may be a helpful way for the street department to quickly inform residents about which streets are being worked on, where the snowplows are headed and other street department activities.
The new way of communicating wouldn't cost a thing, Bjorgaard said.
