Traffic resumes today on Highway 55 in Douglas, Pope counties
Traffic will resume later today on Highway 55 as crews finish a reconstruction, resurfacing, and bridge and culvert replacement project between Glenwood and the Grant/Douglas county line that began May 10.
Following the reopening of Highway 55, motorists may still encounter shoulder closures, crews and equipment as they complete miscellaneous clean-up work in the area for one to two weeks.
The project included culvert replacements, sections of road reconstruction, milling and paving and a bridge replacement over the Chippewa River east of Hoffman. The rehabilitation project will provide a stronger, safer highway and a smoother ride.
The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) and Central Specialties Inc., the contractor for the project, thank the public for their patience and cooperation during this extensive construction project.
During construction and road maintenance work, MnDOT urges drivers to:
--Check www.511mn.org or call 5-1-1 for up-to-date information about traffic and road conditions.
--Stay alert, expect the unexpected.
--Never enter a road that has been blocked with barriers or cones.
--Don't use cell phones.
--Remember text messaging while driving is illegal.
--Don't eat or drink while driving.
--Be patient. Expect delays, especially during peak travel times.
